BigBlueButton BBB for webinars

BigBlueButton

BigBlueButton (BBB) is a webinar tool you can use on your TalTech Moodle course page.

BBB features:

  • real-time video and audio, presentation, and PC screen sharing (Chrome, Firefox, latest Edge)

  • breakout rooms for virtual group work

  • session recording and sharing

  • virtual whiteboard (if needed, all participants can use the whiteboard at the same time)

  • polling during the session

  • saving the list of participants

  • event statistics

The recommended number of BigBlueButton users per session is a maximum of 100 participants.
For a larger number of participants, we recommend using MS Teams.

How to record a BBB session?

Click the Start Recording button at the top of the BBB session window. In the Start recording confirmation window, click Yes. The red circle and time running indicate that the session is now being recorded. You can pause and restart the recording if necessary. The final recording of the session will still be displayed as one recording. To finish your meeting click the three dots in the top right of the BBB session window. Click End Meeting from the drop-down menu to end your meeting and recording.

NB! Clicking Log out does not end the recording process. Recording continues until the last participant leaves the session. If you exited the session without ending it, you can always end it inside the BBB activity by clicking End session.

To view the recording, open the BBB activity you used to host the session. The recording can take a few hours to a day to process (processing time depends on the recorded session length). Finished recordings will automatically appear under Recordings inside your BBB activity. Click on Video under Playback to view the recording. Recordings also have a Statistics overview (downloadable), which shows participants, student engagement during the session, poll results, etc.

Answer

How many participants can there be in one BBB session?

The recommended limit for BigBlueButton is up to 100 users per session. If it is known in advance that more than a hundred participants will join the session, we recommend using MS Teams instead.

Is there a way I can document who attended the session?

The session moderator can export the participants' list. To do this, click on the gear icon in the Users section and select the Save user names from the drop-down list.

Recorded sessions also have session statistics overview which shows participants, student engagement during the session, poll results, etc.

I entered the session in "Listen only" mode. How can I turn on my microphone?

Click the headphones icon at the bottom of the screen (Leave audio and your audio will be disconnected.

To rejoin audio, press the same icon again (now named Join audio) to choose the Microphone mode.
