Graduation thesis and final examination

Ordinary defences of bachelor’s, master’s, engineering and professional higher education theses shall be organised twice a year to the defence term noted in the academic calendar. Defences of doctoral theses shall take place at any time during the year.




Graduation thesis

A first or second level student who wishes to defend his/her graduation thesis shall submit a defence application by the deadline established in the academic calendar; the application shall include the original language of the thesis, the title both in Estonian and English and the name of the supervisor, the second level students shall indicate also the CERCS classification.

  1. Go to menu: Documents > APPLICATIONS.

  2. Find application “Defense of graduation thesis” from the list and click on link „Apply“ at the end of the row.

  3. An application form opens up:

  4. Fill in the form:

    • Title of graduation thesis in Estonian - enter the title of the thesis in Estonian. Make sure there are no mistakes in the title for this is how it’s gonna show on diploma supplement. Do not put the title between quotation marks or a full stop at the end of the title.

    • Title of the graduation thesis in English - enter the title of the thesis in English, following the rules of English titles writing.

    • Language of graduation thesis - select the original language of the thesis from drop down menu.

    • Degree applied for - select the degree from drop down menu. Normally there’s just one option available.

    • Supervisor’s name - type in and select the name of your thesis supervisor.

    • Co-supervisor’s name - type in and select the name of co-supervisor if there officially was one.

  5. Click on “Save“ to submit the form.



Doctoral thesis

A doctoral student who wishes to defend his/her doctoral thesis shall submit the defence application.

  1. Go to menu: Documents > APPLICATIONS.

  2. Find application “Defense of graduation thesis” from the list and click on link „Apply“ at the end of the row.

  3. An application form opens up:

    • Topic of the graduation thesis in Estonian – enter the title of the thesis in Estonian. Make sure there are no mistakes in the title for this is how it’s gonna show on diploma supplement. Do not put the title between quotation marks or a full stop at the end of the title.

    • Topic of the graduation thesis in English - enter the title of the thesis in English, following the rules of English titles writing.

    • Language of graduation thesis - select the original language of the thesis from drop down menu.

    • CERCS classifier (1) and CERCS classifier (2) - select the classifier(s) from drop down menu.

    • Degree applied for - select the degree from drop down menu.

    • Supervisor’s name, name of co-supervisor 1 and name of co-supervisor 2 - the system displays the names of the supervisor and co-supervisors that have been previously confirmed.

  5. Click on “Save“ to submit the form.



Final examination

Final examination is declared in the study plan at the beginning of the semester. As an exception, the dean / director of the educational institution may allow a final examination to be declared at another time during the academic year.

  1. Go to menu: My study information > MY STUDY PLAN:
  2. Add the final examination course to your study plan.

  3. When your study plan is completed then click “Save and SUBMIT”:
